Gwyneth Herbert

Gwyneth Herbert is an award-winning composer / lyricist, strikingly original performer and versatile musical adventurer who really loves to make things. Since last Summer’s launch of her critically acclaimed sixth album and cross-artform project, The Sea Cabinet – the result of an Aldeburgh Music residency – Gwyn’s seen her musical co-written with playwright Diane Samuels open at the Southwark Playhouse, recorded the favourite tunes of Nell Gwyn and the Duke of Wellington for Radio 4’s Playlist Series, and spent a month in Kenya collecting lullabies, sharing songs in slum schools and staging multi-tribe storytelling happenings under the Mombasa stars. Stuff she’s developing this year includes: The Rhythm Method – a theatrical exploration of contraception (with Samuels), a bilingual surrealist musical (with director Kath Burlinson), a musical installation about Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore and a Fun Palace in Stratford Station (both with artist Mel Brimfield), and there’ll be more Kenyan adventures squeezed into the next available window.
